  42. <meta content="Objective: To define the role of social
  43. theory and examine how research studies
  44. using qualitative methods can use social
  45. theory to generalise their results beyond
  46. the setting of the study or to other social
  47. groups.
  48. Approach: The assumptions underlying
  49. public health research using qualitative
  50. methods derive from a range of social
  51. theories that include conflict theory,
  52. structural functionalism, symbolic
  53. interactionism, the sociology of knowledge
  54. and feminism. Depending on the research
  55. problem, these and other social theories
  56. provide conceptual tools and models
  57. for constructing a suitable research
  58. framework, and for collecting and analysing
  59. data. In combination with the substantive
  60. health literature, the theoretical literature
  61. provides the conceptual bridge that links
  62. the conclusions of the study to other social
  63. groups and settings.
  64. Conclusion: While descriptive studies
  65. using qualitative research methods can
  66. generate important insights into social
  67. experience, the use of social theory in
  68. the construction and conduct of research
  69. enables researchers to extrapolate their
  70. findings to settings and groups broader

  325. theory and examine how research studies&#13;
  326. using qualitative methods can use social&#13;
  327. theory to generalise their results beyond&#13;
  328. the setting of the study or to other social&#13;
  329. groups.&#13;
  330. Approach: The assumptions underlying&#13;
  331. public health research using qualitative&#13;
  332. methods derive from a range of social&#13;
  333. theories that include conflict theory,&#13;
  334. structural functionalism, symbolic&#13;
  335. interactionism, the sociology of knowledge&#13;
  336. and feminism. Depending on the research&#13;
  337. problem, these and other social theories&#13;
  338. provide conceptual tools and models&#13;
  339. for constructing a suitable research&#13;
  340. framework, and for collecting and analysing&#13;
  341. data. In combination with the substantive&#13;
  342. health literature, the theoretical literature&#13;
  343. provides the conceptual bridge that links&#13;
  344. the conclusions of the study to other social&#13;
  345. groups and settings.&#13;
  346. Conclusion: While descriptive studies&#13;
  347. using qualitative research methods can&#13;
  348. generate important insights into social&#13;
  349. experience, the use of social theory in&#13;
  350. the construction and conduct of research&#13;
  351. enables researchers to extrapolate their&#13;
  352. findings to settings and groups broader&#13;
  353. than the ones in which the research was&#13;
  354. conducted.</p></div><table style="margin-bottom: 1em" cellpadding="3" class="not_ep_block" border="0"><tr><th valign="top" class="ep_row">Item Type:</th><td valign="top" class="ep_row">Article</td></tr><tr><th valign="top" class="ep_row">Additional Information:</th><td valign="top" class="ep_row">"The definitive version is available at www.blackwell-synergy.com"&#13;
